In conversation with Sahin Tugcular, Managing Director of Apptec GmbH, about the importance of a mobile device management (MDM) solution in corporate applications.
Mr. Tugcular, what importance do companies attribute to centralized management of their mobile devices in use in 2019?
Sahin Tugcular: The importance is still very high, as the companies do not want to configure the devices individually and want to record them centrally.
What influence has the European Basic Data Protection Regulation (EU-DSGVO) exerted here?
Tugcular: In any case, the EU-DSGVO has contributed to an increased demand for the topic “MDM”. Companies want to ensure that business data remains separate from private data and that data can be deleted remotely in the event of a problem.
When should companies start implementing a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution? On what criteria does this depend?
Tugcular: In fact, almost every company needs an MDM. Starting with the protection of these devices up to the central administration of these devices. An MDM has its advantages in every company.
What challenges does such an introduction often pose? What are the stumbling blocks – and how can they be avoided?
Tugcular: Actually, there are no stumbling blocks. It’s up to the customer to decide which hiring options the company wants to use. In any case, it is important to think in advance about how much the devices should be restricted and which security settings should apply.
Keyword “BYOD”: To what extent can mobile devices with different operating systems (iOS, Android, Windows) be centrally managed together?
Tugcular: This is no problem at all with our solution. We support all common operating systems.
How can employees be sure that the MDM solution will not “spy on” private data at the same time?
Tugcular: Very secure with our solution. We have no access to private data such as pictures, chat and private e-mail accounts.
What happens if, for example, a mobile device is lost or stolen? What can an MDM solution do at this point?
Tugcular: In this case they can lock the device remotely or delete the content.
What challenges do MDM vendors face in developing their solutions?
Tugcular: The challenge lies in the fact that many operating systems are available and each has its own interfaces. As a software manufacturer, we therefore have very high development and maintenance costs.
